4:30pm to 6:30pm @
Habitat for Humanity Home Discount Center
2620 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd
You are invited to an opening reception for 'Poetics of Shelter', on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010. The reception will be held at the Habitat for Humanity Home Discount Center from 4:30-6:30 pm.
'Poetics of Shelter' is an immersive learning opportunity involving Ball State graduate art seminar students Jake Baxter, Gary Birk, Jon Bryson, Zach Craw, Sarah Jones, Ann Lang, Beth Roop, Jimmy Ryan, Judy Wand and directed by instructor Anita Powell. The seminar partnered with Habitat for Humanity Home Discount Store of Muncie for materials and with individuals who are not of the Visual Arts area to develop a piece that dealt with 'Home' or 'Shelter'. As part of the project development each student read The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard and integrated ideas and/or concepts presented in the reading into a final piece. The culmination of the seminar will be an exhibition at the Home Discount Store. The show opens on May 5 and will run until June 4, 2010 during store hours. Habitat for Humanity Home Discount Center is located at 2620 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Muncie.Sep 2, 2010

Start September's First Thursday with Arts at the Atrium Gallery reception for Gunther Cartwright's Industrial Blues.

Gunther Cartwright's photography has been described as "powerful images of the structural elements of bridges, buildings, highways, fences and storage containers examine the formal relationships of line, form and color in the industrial landscape." This exhibition features Cartwright's artwork that "like the American Precisionists of the 1920's clarifies the geometrical structures of the machine age and provides us with a crisp new perspective of our contemporary industrial culture."Sep 16, 2010

Downtown
The Muncie Arts and Culture Council and Ball State University's Departments of Fine Art, Music, and Architecture will join forces with downtown merchants, galleries, and property owners for an evening of art, food, architecture exploration, and fabulous music.
In addition to the well-established "First Thursday" art gallery openings downtown, various Ball State University departments representing the arts will share a wealth of musical talent and visual artistry.
Many downtown businesses that do not traditionally present as art venues will open their doors to host artists from across the East central Indiana region. First Merchants Bank and Mutual Bank will be anchor locations for our guest artists.
Some guided tours of permanent art collections housed in the downtown area will also be featured.
Any artists, poets, musicians, filmmakers, dancers, and/or theatrical groups who would like to be involved in the evening's festivities are encouraged to email chercrowder@gmail.com or call (765) 282-7897.

Art Attack!
7:00am to 7:00pm @
Art and Journalism Building, Ball State University
Atrium
1001 N. McKinley Ave.
Come one, come all, to my 12-hour ART ATTACK!
The goal:
One massive, collaborative piece of art, created within 12 hours and only 12 hours!
The method:
I will have a table in the Atrium between the hours of 7 and 7 on Friday, December 3rd, with a massive roll of butcher block, pencils, etc.
You will stop by at some point during the day, shrug off the aches and pains of a stressful year, and pour your heart into 5 minutes or 5 hours of drawing! You can just stop in for a second, or you can get a whole bunch of your friends together and stop on by with every crayon, marker, pen and pencil that you can get your hands on!
Your choice!
Sincerely,
~Brian BaumanJan 6, 2011

tattooindiana.com- First Thursday Art Opening: "Random Thoughts and Observations" 5:00pm to 8:00pm @ The Artist Within 313 S. Walnut
The Artist Within presents "Random Thoughts and Observations…fairly recent work by Bob Hartley" from February 2-25. There will be an opening reception First Thursday, February 2nd from 5-8pm and the public is welcome to come meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments.
The variety of mediums explored in this exhibit is as random as the subject matter and reflects Hartley's eagerness to try whatever seems to interest him at the moment. The local artist, art educator and studio owner explains his approach as "trying clear out some of the clutter in my mind". He jokes that his wife would probably prefer that he "clear out the clutter" on his desk, in his closet and in the garage. Bob further explains his random thoughts, "I'm sure everyone has had those nights when you are trying to fall asleep, but your mind is still going full throttle. Eventually you have to deal with these thoughts. It is sort of like deleting things on your computer to open up more space on the hard drive. I guess this show is my attempt to clean up my hard drive".
Some of the work reflects the artist's "thoughts and observations" from a period when his mother was staying in an independent living facility. The artist says that when it is the child's turn to care for the parent, it is important that the child maintain that same sense of humor that the parent had used to keep her sanity when caring for you.
It is Hartley's hope that the viewers will recognize some of his "random thoughts and observations" and have an "ah ha" moment as they identify with them.

Time Spent, Time Wasted - Opening Reception
7:00pm to 9:00pm @
Savage's Ale House
127 E High St. Muncie, IN
Savage’s Ale House is proud to announce a new works exhibit by emerging local artist, Andrew Hinck. His abstract paintings will be on display during the month of March 2012, with an opening reception Thursday, March 1st, which coincides with downtown Muncie’s First Thursday event.
A recent Ball State University grad, Hinck has been adamant about continuing to produce work after completing his undergraduate painting degree. Confidence gained by a collections list that includes BSU Housing and Residence has supported his enthusiasm for attempting to artfully engage the Muncie community. The Historic Rose Court Building hosted his first post grad solo show in December, 2011. About March’s show, the artist cited Savage’s as “a great venue to expose young Muncie residents to honest work from local artists.” The bar is happy with that role, boasting, “Showing at Savage’s is such a casual thing. We try to choose artists that are actually customers so that we can be proud of what we show.” Works to be displayed explore themes of choice and opportunity cost through unique manipulation of building materials.
A reception for the artist will be held First Thursday, March 1st, 2012, from 7 to 9 PM at the downtown bar. The public is encouraged to attend and continue their First Thursday experience beyond normal gallery opening hours, as Savage’s is opening until 3 AM. The exhibit can be viewed through April 3rd, 2012 Monday through Saturday 3 PM – 3 AM, and Sunday 3 PM – 1 AM.
