Please make plans to attend one or both of the receptions.
Gallery 308
308 E MainA passion for the arts often begins at an early age, and the talents and imagination of more than 80 young artists will be showcased in a countywide exhibit when Gallery 308 opens its 9th annual K-12 Juried Student Art Show next week. The public is invited to stop by and see what our young local artists are doing. There’s a free reception for the show’s opening on March 7, the First Thursday of the month.
The nonprofit community art gallery provides a juried show each year for Delaware County students in grades K through 12. Because it’s a juried show, awards will be presented. The presentation will be at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 East Main Street at 6:30p.m. The exhibit and refreshments will be offered at the Gallery, located at 308 East Main Street, from 5 to 8 p.m. The artists’ families and friends are welcome.
Students from 12 city and county schools are involved in the show. About 87 entries were accepted into the juried process. The students’ artwork will be displayed at the Gallery through the end of March. Karen Fisher, Gallery 308 Board member and member of the committee that organized this year’s show, said, “This is one of the strongest shows we have ever mounted, the quality of the work is outstanding. It’s a thrilling experience for young artists to see their art professionally framed and hanging in gallery.”
In addition to announcing the prize winners at the opening, the Gallery will announce the name of the school that has won the 2013 Y.B. Williams Art Supply Award. The $500 cash award is given to the school whose students earned the most points for their arts involvement. Fisher explained that students earn points for their school by attending art gallery openings, visiting museums and other art venues. “The school with the most points wins the $500 award which is to be used by the school to purchase art supplies,” she said. The name of the winning school will be announced at the opening reception. Delta Middle School was last year’s winner.
Judges for the juried show were Lynette Whitesell, (primary school artists) and Bob Hartley (secondary school artists).
Artwork for this show was framed at framing workshops offered by the Gallery in February.
The exhibit is made possible by major funding from Trim Masters Charitable Foundation. Other sponsors include: Indiana Public Radio; Department of Art, Ball State University; Muncie Civic Theatre (providing space for the awards presentation); The Artist Within and Art Mart.
Gallery 308’s exhibitions committee consists of David Franklin, Chris Satory Jan Wright, and Karen Fisher.
The gallery is open Wednesdays through Saturday from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Admission is free. The show continues through March 28.

224 E MainMargie Prim began painting in the 1960’s. She took classes and occasionally painted with small groups of painters. It was a doctor’s remark in 2009, however, that kicked the quiet artist into high gear. Reporting that she had some arthritis, the doctor mentioned that it can affect eyesight. Prim decided at that moment to spend as much time painting as she possibly could. She began going along with groups of plein air painters in the region, tromping through fields to paint in every type of weather Indiana can dish out. Between trips, Prim would hone her skills with romantic still life scenes – flower arrangements, a special vase, pears – in the comfort of home. She is now known for both plein air landscapes and still life paintings, quiet of subject and wild with impasto – that is, thick application of paint where brushstrokes are visible and become part of the image. Over a dozen new paintings will be displayed through March on the main gallery wall at Gordy Fine Art and Framing in downtown Muncie.
“Inspiration comes to me by what I see, whether it be plein air or still life,” the quiet artist explains. “Using colors from grays to brights is an adventure for me.” A short talk about Prim’s work will be given by gallery owner, Genny Gordy, at 6 PM during the opening reception on Thursday, March 7, 2013. The opening hours are 5 to 8 PM.
Another artist, David Cuatlacuatl, will speak at 6:30 PM about the work he will display in the new “Nook”, a smaller exhibit space on the west side of Gordy’s main gallery. A recent Ball State University graduate, the award-winning artist creates brightly-colored mixed media and collage pieces. A citizen of Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, Cuatlacuatl states, “Seeing the limited conditions of people native to my hometown and south of the border helped me develop a certain perspective, which I believe has a major influence on me and on my work today.”
The public is invited to the opening reception, and light refreshments will be served. Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next to Civic Theatre. Both exhibits will remain on display through March 30th and may also be viewed during normal business hours at the gallery/frame shop: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. For more information, call 765-284-8422 or visit www.gordyframing.com.

Gallery 308
308 E MainThe ArtCamp Show featuring the talents of more than 45 young artists opens at Gallery 308 August 1. Many of the cities young artists have been busy this summer participating in an Art Camp sponsored by Art Mart and The Artist Within. The campers took a trip "Under the Sea: Exploring the Oceans through Art". Held at The Artist Within, this summer saw six weeks of clay camps and one week of fine arts camp.
Karen Fisher, owner of Art Mart and longtime ArtCamp instructor, said her students aged 5 to 13 created traditional Japanese fish prints, a school of origami fish, 3-D papier-mâché puffer fish, and a mural of sea creatures. Artist Within owner Bob Hartley stated, "It is really fun watching them grow and to follow their artistic growth. The excitement the kids bring is what keeps this old art teacher eager for the return of Summer ArtCamps."
The campers have drawn, painted, and potted during their underwater exploration. Fisher added, "The highpoint for each of the young artists is the thrill of seeing their artistic creations professionally hung and lit in a gallery." The culmination of their art camp experience will be an exhibit at Gallery 308 with the First Thursday reception. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.
The gallery is open Friday from 3:00 – 7:00 pm and Saturday from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Admission is free. The ArtCamp Show continues through August 3.

224 E MainFaulkner Watercolors August Exhibit - Jim Faulkner is one of the best known artists of east central Indiana, and his interests and reputation as a watercolor painter extend throughout the state and beyond. But it is Indiana that has received most of the artist's attention for the past two decades. Since 1990, Faulkner has been accepted twenty times into the famed Hoosier Salon exhibits, winning six awards. In the same period, ten painting have been juried into Watercolor Society of Indiana exhibits, earning seven awards. Minnetrista Annual and Hoosier Heritage have provided three awards each, with a Merit Award in 2013 at the latter. Faulkner has taught numerous workshops, and also taught in the Ball State University Art Dept., where he first met Brian and Genny Gordy, as students. Brian credits his former professor with instilling the beauty of transparent watercolors into his art career. Faulkner received both his own undergraduate and master's degrees at BSU.
Faulkner will exhibit new paintings that were done in the fall, winter and spring seasons of 2012-13. A lover of his chosen medium, the artist offers, "As always, I was primarily interested in wonderful images all around me, and my futile attempts to capture that image – but with the added beauty of watercolor paint on rag paper." Opening with a First Thursday reception on August 1, 2013, the show continues through the end of the month. The artist will speak about his work and answer questions, beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
Interesting notes about this Muncie artist include the fact that Faulkner was an abstract painter for 15 years before returning to his roots of realist watercolors. He was also a dedicated sculptor, and taught Brian and Genny – and many others, including nephew, Steve Clark, the art of bronze casting in the 1970's. He and his wife, Eleanor, live on a small farmstead outside Muncie with various cats and dogs. Jim's studio is in their restored barn.
Corrinne LeNeave Installation in Nook Gallery - Alexandra Corrinne LeNeave will exhibit installation pieces in the Nook gallery at Gordy's. A recent graduate of Ball State University, she holds a BFA in Video Art and Electronic Media. Her work examines object ownership as it flows between generations in a family.
Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co. is located at 224 E. Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. For more information, call 765-284-8422 or visit www.gordyframing.com.

Annual Salon ShowTwo dozen area artists will hang works for the holidays at Gordy Fine Art and Framing, including oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, drawings, original prints, pottery, jewelry, photographs and sculpture pieces. The salon show will be on display through January 31, 2014.
“We’ve added a few artists to our award-winning lineup this year, which helps keep the event fresh and interesting,” offers gallery director, Braydee Euliss. “The works range from traditional oil paintings of landscapes and florals to more modern and abstract pieces and figurative works.” She continues, “We encourage guests to ask questions. Art openings definitely have a learning component, and we all love to talk about art.”
A salon show differs from typical exhibits by allowing pieces to be removed from the show at time of sale. They are replaced by other pieces or the exhibit is rearranged. This allows patrons to consider art for holiday decorating or gift giving, concepts that also support the artists, who appreciate selling their work before year’s end.
Artists in the Salon Show include Kim and Scott Anderson, Sue Beach, Carol Burt, David Dale, Eric Ernstberger, Braydee Euliss, Jim Faulkner, Charlene George, Brian and Genny Gordy, Corey Hagelberg, David and Sarojini Johnson, Suzanne Lambert, Paul Laseau, Cheryl Anne Lorance, Shonet Martin, Jan McCune, Alan Patrick, John Peterson, Marty Price, Margie Prim, Kyle Rees, Carol Strockwasson and Lynette Waters.
A reception for the artists will be held during the monthly First Thursday art event on Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 5 to 8 PM. The reception will also serve as a farewell party for Ben Gordy, General Manager, who is pursuing a new degree in Indianapolis. A short talk at 6:30 will focus on the various works on exhibit, representing over two dozen local artists who work in oils, watercolors, acrylics, photography, printmaking, mixed media, jewelry and pottery. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

Paul Laseau RetrospectivePaul Laseau began painting in watercolor media in 1992 while on a trip to the Greek islands. He was inspired by the delicate, but vibrant colors of the sunbaked white villages that cling to the crests of the island mountains. He brought to this work observation skills developed through 35 years of experience in freehand sketching and photography of architectural subjects throughout Europe and North America. Architectural images have continued to be the dominant focus of his paintings, based on subsequent trips to the coasts of Greece, Italy, England, New England, and the Maritime Provinces of Canada.
"Like many artists, I was drawn to watercolor because the medium supports a fluid, spontaneous approach to painting." He continues, "While my approach to painting involves some forethought or planning, there is a pleasurable flow to the work that would be ruined by extended 'massaging' of a painting.
"For me, the value of painting lies more in the act of painting than in the end result. Typically, I am completely absorbed in the subject of a painting. I continue to be fascinated by the historical response of humans to the forces of nature – land, water, sun – as they define appropriate human habitat. Coastal towns and harbors provide particularly vibrant subjects."
Paul Laseau, AIA, is a Ball State University professor emeritus of architecture with over twenty five years’ experience teaching freehand sketching and design drawing. He is the author of: Graphic Thinking for Architects and Designers; Graphic problem Solving for Architects; Inkline Drawing; Architectural Drawing: Options for Design; The Handbook of Architectural Representation; Freehand Sketching – An Introduction; Watercolor Sketching, and Visual Notes (with Norman Crowe).
Laseau’s paintings and drawings have been exhibited at the University of Wisconsin, University of Arizona in Tucson, Clemson in South Carolina, and Ball State University. He has given workshops, presentations and exhibits on sketching, design drawing and watercolor painting for several universities in the US and Europe.
"Paintings in this exhibit have been selected to represent the variety of my work in watercolor over a two-decade span. Although most of the work consists of landscapes or cityscapes, the locales of the subjects are varied due to many opportunities traveling and painting in Europe and North America.
"My style of painting may be termed realistic, and has been heavily influenced by Mel Stabin, artist and teacher. His simultaneous approach to painting provided a fitting transition from my thirty-year background in freehand sketching. My preference is to attack a subject head-on and rapidly, hoping for an inspired response."
The artist will give a short talk about his work, and answer questions, beginning at 6:15 on opening night, Thursday, March 6, 2014. His exhibition will hang through Saturday, March 1st, and may be viewed at Gordy’s during normal business hours: Monday – Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturdays, 9 to 3, or by appointment. From the Stage to the WallRose Court will be presenting "From the Stage to the Wall", featuring three local artists who are also well-known local actors. For each, their love of the theater or classic films has influenced their artwork in some way:
Tom Cherry, who is well known for his acting roles in local community theatre for the last ten years, is also a cartoonist. When he's not acting, he's 'tooning. He also writes scripts for "Tom Cherry's Old Time Radio Show", a monthly radio show in Farmland, Indiana and co-created the musical "Swann Song" with Jerry & Judy Cole. Tom will be featuring his cartoon artwork in pen and ink.
Wendy Carpenter has also performed in stage productions in various venues around East Central Indiana. Wendy has had a life-long interest in painting in part due to her artistic muse - Bob Ross. She has brought her love of the stage to her subjects and will be featuring her works in acrylics.
Sean Orlosky, having just wrapped up his role in Spamalot, has performed in many stage productions. In his spare time, he is also a freelance painter & classic film fan. He combines those two loves into a collection of portraits featuring stars from the golden age of Hollywood.

The Artist Within will feature the sculptural assemblages of Angie Hedman. Hedman received her BS in Art Education and a BFA in Metalsmithing from BSU in 1998. A few years later she went back and to earn an MA in Metalsmithing from BSU in 2006. Since 1999, Angie has taught Art at Lincoln Middle/High School in Cambridge City, IN. She teaches grades 6-8 general art, and grades 9-12 three-dimensional art. This talented young artist resides in Muncie with her husband and two children. They own Phoenix Design, a small screen-printing business in Muncie.Hedman says that the work in “Then, Now and POW!” is a collection of past and present experiences and interests. Each piece tells a story. Some of the pieces in this collection are about secrets, lies, truth, ex-boyfriends, failure and success.
This particular collection of work was also influenced by Angie’s love of Pop Art, comic books, toys and board games. She often pairs contrasting objects together. The artist feels that something magical happens when objects from different genres, decades, textures, and materials merge and "make sense". She likes to collect small and unusual objects that she often uses in her work. Vintage photographs, copper wire, screws, bolts, text, and paint also make their way in to most of her work. The work in this collection can be divided into two categories: Sculptural Assemblage Boxes, and Gameboard Purses. The two are quite different, but still complement each other. Students EndeavorsJoin Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on June 5, 2014, for an opening reception and art show featuring two Cornerstone student artists, Tambra White and Wendy Carpenter. Their combined show will feature works of acrylic on canvas, landscapes, odes to nature, and watercolor pieces. The opening reception will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The gallery will be on display throughout the month of June.
Wendy Carpenter lives cozily in Yorktown with her husband of almost 23 years, two of her three children, and spoiled Shih-Tzu mix, Jax. Along with her art work, she is also enjoys the spotlight, acting in many of the district’s local theatres.
Carpenter learned her artistic style from her great-grandfather and remembers their time painting landscapes together fondly. Most of her works are comprised of acrylic on canvas, but she also enjoys dabbling in watercolors.
Tambra White began her career in special education, rather than art. After teaching for over a decade, she transitioned to become a stay at home mom for her two children and husband of 17 years.
White first discovered her talent during a class at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. At first White only mirrored her instructor’s work, but eventually created her own style and branched out to a variety of different media and content, her favorite being trees.
The Art Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the building. It will continue to exhibit and promote the artwork of Cornerstone students and instructors, local high school and college students, as well as local and regional artists.

Old-Fashioned Pop Painter“An Old-Fashioned Pop Painter” showcasing the talents of New Orleans artist Nancy Witte opens First Thursday at Gallery 308 on June 5. “The exhibition features her favorite themes of hotels, motels, sixties advertising, Coney Island and the sea. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.
Witte says, “I have a definite thing for signs. My dad was a commercial artist for International Harvester, the farm & tractor company, which was kind of funny because he was a total city boy. He worked in their sign division and there were sign industry manuals around the house with different letter type sets that just fascinated me. I could look at those for hours.”
Born in Chicago, she had no formal training; however, she was influenced by both her parents who met at the American Academy of Art while studying commercial illustration. “There were always good art supplies around the house, particularly Prismacolor pencils.”
According to Witte, she works from both her own digital photos & found images and almost everything she paints is in acrylic. She states, “I have a love/hate relationship with Chicago; it has definitely fueled my art. Plus I was a vagabond when I was young living in Seattle, Key West, New York, and Alaska.
She now lives outside New Orleans in Meraux, Louisiana, on a thin strip of land between the marshes of Lake Borgne & the Mississippi River. Witte says the light here is fabulous with the sun hitting the water on both sides; it's the best light I've ever painted in...besides Key West. She added, “A lot the things I have painted are gone, wiped away by Katrina--the Sugar Bowl Motel, the Deep South Motel. I suppose that is natural anywhere, but the sense of change is more marked here.”
Her work has been exhibited at Remembering What Care Forgot: An Exhibition Celebrating New Orleans Culture & Revival at ABC NO RIO New York, the Pilsen Juried Art Fair in Chicago, and the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus Art Show at Big Top Gallery in New Orleans.
The exhibit will be on display through June 27. The gallery’s hours are Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Admission is free.

Summer Invitational: New ModesTwelve contemporary artists have been invited to exhibit for two months at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. Gallery manager Braydee Euliss selected artists to create “a more contemporary collection.” While the artists work in traditional formats – sculpture, photography, printmaking, etc., they tend to be non-traditional in their application or approach. “This show is a response to our public to help keep them abreast of all art trends,” Euliss explains. “Part of our job as a gallery is to keep patrons excited about the art we hang and install.” While a few of the exhibitors have ties to Muncie or the gallery, none of them are “house artists” – those exclusively represented by the Gordy’s.
Three of the exhibitors, however, did work for the Gordy’s while attending Ball State University. Seven have direct ties to the university, either as art professors or employees of the BSU Art Museum. Tim McMichael is from Indianapolis and Art Hazelwood is a well-known San Francisco artist. McCauley holds an MFA from Columbus College of Art & Design (Ohio), and is now a professor there.
“I looked for work that excites me, that I would want to have on the wall for two months,” offers Euliss about her collection. “While it is hard to lump these artists into one group, I would suggest that they are all using familiar media in non-traditional ways; a formula our patrons will connect with.”
Summer Invitational: New Modes, will open on June 5, 2014, at 5 PM, as part of the First Thursday arts walk. Light refreshments will be served and several of the artists will be in attendance. A short talk about the exhibit will be given at 6:15 PM, with a question/answer session following.
The exhibit will close on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 3 PM.
Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. For more information, call the gallery at (765)284-8422, or visit www.gordyframing.com.

219 S WalnutHeorot will feature Riles Kyuubi, a student at Ball State studying printmaking. Kyuubi will be exhibiting a series of figure drawings that explore, not only contour of the body, but for the artist tap in to memories of places and times.
Artist Statement: "I had never liked figure drawing. I never liked the images that I was left with. They never spoke to me or did much of anything. After taking classes and doing it for years I finally found that I enjoyed looking back and remember the subjects. I would think back on their personality or what it was like drawing that day. Figure drawing for me became a process or remembering a place in time a spiritual portrait of someone I didn't know. In this series I was trying to find something ethereal within each piece. I would take an element and obsess over it until I felt that I could remember the moment, the time, and space for a lifetime."

The White River RuggersThe group will be displaying their highly creative hand hooked rug creations. Traditional rug hooking is the technique of pulling loops of fabric strips, usually wool through the mesh of a backing, usually burlap, rug warp, linen or monks cloth, to create a pile. The hook is much like a crochet hook. The wool may be new fabric or recycled wool clothing that has been torn apart, washed, dried and cut into strips. The rug hookers often custom dye their wool in order to create the pallet of colors they use, much like mixing paint for a painting. Patterns will range from traditional to contemporary in a variety of styles and intricacy.
Rose Court is looking for artists for the following months: July, September, November, and December. Any artists who would like the opportunity to exhibit at Rose Court during First Thursday are encouraged to email loisgreens3@gmail.com. During the four one-week sessions, students aged 6-12 learned hand building techniques in clay and had the opportunity to throw on the potter’s wheel under the watchful eye of resident potter Toren Scott. Bob Hartley, owner of Artist Within added, “Working with the campers and the excitement and eagerness they bring to each project…well it never gets old. I look forward to Clay Camps as a way to share my passion for teaching art without the pressure of ISTEPs”.
The culmination of the student’s art camp experience will be an exhibit at Gallery 308 with the First Thursday reception. Hartley added, “The campers think it is “awesome” to see their work displayed in a real gallery. An opening reception to meet and greet the young artists will be held during First Thursday from 5-8pm. The public is welcome.

Still FloatingImagine a faceless floating figure, adorned with gold and yellow over free-form shapes of blue. Imagine this feminine figure repeated in various forms – drawing, collage, ceramics – while always maintaining its surreal, but benevolent, anonymity. Bursts of gold resemble lightening bugs circle the figure and dance over the paper shapes. Reminiscent of Native American, or even Aztecan art, these faceless forms seem to speak to the Spiritual Feminine.
“I’ve been working with the floating woman image for over a decade, using drawing, painting and clay techniques. I’m often asked who the floating woman is, and my response is that I don’t know,” is all the artist offers, leaving each patron to choose their own storyline for the images. Sometimes titles give a clue. “Daydreaming,” is both stop-action and active, with small dabs of paint or cut out papers dancing across solid blue blocks while the faceless figure stands, small but mighty, calm but ready.
Trained as a fiber artist and a potter, Lambert Martin holds a B.S. in art education and a Master’s degree in Art from Ball State University. She served as a Master Teaching Artist for Very Special Arts of Indiana and has taught classes at Cornerstone Center for the Arts, Minnerista and St. Mary’s school. Shonet also taught several summer arts camps with the Gordy’s, specializing in paper making and ceramics.

Midwest Landscape: New Paintings by Carol StrockwassonAward-winning artist Carol Strockwasson will be featured during the month of March at Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company in downtown Muncie. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, March 6, 2015, from 5 to 8 PM. The artist will briefly speak and answer questions from the audience beginning at 6:15 PM.
A dedicated plein air painter, Strockwasson regularly sets up her easel and pastels in fields and woods of east central Indiana, mindful of the sunlight as it exposes certain features and allows long shadows on others. Pastels have a long and honored place in the art history of this region, and the hardworking Strockwasson is proud to be part of the current chapter.
“This body of work is principally about the pastel medium, expressing the vibrancy and permanence of the pigments,” explains the artist. Included in the exhibit will be several paintings from her “Willow Series,” which is an ongoing collection of paintings that focus on a single tree and the effects of light and color on it during different painting sessions. The artist is part of the local Wasson Nursery family, so her affinity for trees, plants and landscapes is understandable.
Strockwasson maintains an impressive exhibition and award schedule. She will be a featured artist at the Door County Plein Air Festival in Wisconsin in July 2015, and was recently included in, “Ohio Prairies: A Year in the Life,” a show at the Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, Ohio.
The artist will speak briefly about her work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. There will be art-related activities for both children and adults.

224 E MainMinding the Gaps in the Foundation of the Sensual
Drawing and paintings, step aside. Sculpture will take over the gallery at Gordy Fine Art & Framing for the month of May, thanks to Ball State University art instructor, Chet Geiselman. The artist describes himself as, “a creative problem solver, a collector and arranger of objects and information, a fabricator of visual forms, and a lifelong student of spiritual and human nature.” Bauhaus design has served as a beacon for his personal creations made of wood, steel and “recontextualized found objects.” Geiselman grew up in a small German farming community in southern Indiana. His grandfather was a blacksmith and his father and uncle were welders. Chet learned to weld and build things at a very young age, and eventually earned an MFA in Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
Guests to the January Salon Show at Gordy’s may recall a pair of framed wood sculptures by Geiselman. Neatly contained in deep white wood cases, undulating wood forms recall smooth-skinned knobby trees, or perhaps, sand dunes held in time. Each of Geiselman’s pieces suggests a formal relationship to the space it inhabits and alludes to the potential functionality of the objects that compose it. The full title of this exhibit is, “Minding the Gaps in the Foundation of the Sensual.”
The artist will speak briefly about his work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM during the opening reception on Thursday, May 7, 2015. Identity: Searching Inside OurselvesJoin Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on June 4, 2015, for the opening reception of “Identity: Searching Inside Ourselves” featuring an installation about history and community by Inspire Academy’s 6th grade class. This interactive showcase will include in-depth profiles of “identity” crafted through interviews, photographs, and stories gathered this semester highlighting local citizens that have lived through experiences of otherness and developed a deeper sense of belonging. This event will also give you the opportunity to speak with the artists and their community partners.
Inspire Academy – A School of Inquiry – is a tuition-free, public charter school located in Muncie, Indiana. Inspire is an “Expeditionary Learning School” that teaches its students through semester-long, in-depth studies called expeditions. “Identity: Searching Inside Ourselves” is the final product for this year’s 6th grade class who have studied a variety of cultural, religious, societal, and other perspectives of those who often are overlooked in history. The project focuses on the questions, “What is otherness?,” “How has what defines otherness changed/stayed the same throughout history?,” “How have dominant perspectives limited our resources for understanding history?,” and “How does considering multiple viewpoints enrich our knowledge of history and ourselves?” Each question has been evaluated by looking at identity, otherness, belonging, and dominant and non-dominant perspectives over the last 3,000+ years of Western history, as well as the current day.
The students have incorporated fieldwork to gain more knowledge from experts in the topic of study, as well as those from the community who have shared their own Testimonies of Identity. Students have utilized their research, interview, writing, and photography skills to create a narrative of the beautiful and multi-faceted nature of identity in our own community.
The opening reception will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 4th at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. There will be a special discussion at 6:30 pm with the artists and their community partners. The show will be on display throughout the month of June. Dave Kuhn MemorialA tribute exhibit featuring the works of David Kuhn opens First Thursday at Gallery 308 on June 4. Curated by his friend and fellow artist Alfredo Marin-Carle is a collection of Kuhn’s art created over a lifetime. The opening reception for the “Dave Kuhn Memorial” exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.
According to his Marin-Carle, Kuhn’s friend of more than 25 years, the exhibit will showcase more than 70 works of art created by Kuhn over his lifetime. Born in Greenfield, Indiana, in 1951, he attended John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, Kuhn started his career as an illustrator working at ad agencies in Indianapolis eventually landing a job as an illustrator at P.A.W.S, Inc. where he spent 25 years before retiring. Marin says Kuhn was incredibly prolific and described his friend’s art having an incredible sense of color. With influences ranging from the Populuxe aesthetic to Memphis Design, from classical Japanese drama to Brazil’s Carnival, it would be an understatement to call Dave Kuhn’s art eclectic. His works not only embrace a range of cultural influences, but also convey his deep and abiding sense of playful curiosity and ongoing experimentation.
Though initially known for his expertise as an airbrush artist, he cast a wide net in choosing the tools and materials he would use for his own art, not only airbrush, but also assemblage, laminates, fiber, incised impasto, pastel, color pencil – he created in all manner of media, producing works of lively imagination and, later in his career, exploring ghostly symbols and figures as mysterious as those found on ancient cave walls. His diverse aesthetic was further informed by his passionate love of music.
A former rock drummer, Dave’s musical taste was as wide-ranging as his cultural interests: Tom Waits, bebop, blues, Latin rhythm, and of course reggae, for though he lived his entire life in Indiana, he was, at heart, an Island soul. In all its many forms, his artwork reveals Dave’s generosity of spirit and his passionate embrace of life.
The gallery is open Fridays from 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Admission is free. The show continues through June 26.

Jan McCune and Sarojini JohnsonLocal artists Jan McCune and Sarojini Johnson will exhibit new work with support from the Indiana Arts Commission for the months of June & July. The duo received grants to support their studio efforts; Johnson’s, in printmaking, and McCune in jewelry-making. Johnson, a Ball State University art professor, will speak about her exotic and elaborate intaglio prints at 6:15 PM. McCune will follow with a talk and jewelry casting demonstration at 6:30 PM.
Offers McCune: “For my Indiana Arts Commission grant project, I learned silver casting. Each piece of jewelry in the show has one or more components which I created either by sand casting or centrifugal casting.” Regionally known first for creating earrings and bracelets, McCune has only recently started producing the rings that require casting equipment. The former art teacher explains, “What I love about casting is that I can now produce complex three dimensional forms which I would find impossible using any other technique.” New pieces include silver castings of an ornate antique button, an acacia seed pod, and a redbud pod, each one-of-a-kind and steeped in “sense of place.” This is Indiana fine art down to its roots.
Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. For more information, call 765-284-8422.
