Celebrate the arts in Downtown Muncie from 5pm to 9pm on first Thursday in October! Muncie Symphony Orchestra is taking stage at Canan Commons for a free outdoor concert at 5:30pm, Douglas Droste, conductor.

Bring the whole family, share a picnic, dance on the lawn, gaze at the clouds (no rain please!); sip a refreshing, favorite beverage.  It’s all about celebrating the arts and enjoying last warm days in the fall, before moving indoors for the winter.

The MSO will also have an activity booth with instrument petting zoo as one of the Arts Walk vendors. Stop by with your children!

The Spring 2014 Muncie YART will be held on Thursday, May 1st (5-9pm) and is open and free to everyone! :) 

YART is a Yard Sale for Art. We keep the yard sale vibe going by having the sale outdoors and keeping all art priced under $40. I hold YART twice a year, in May and October, in Downtown Muncie, in the parking lot of Old National Financial on the corner of Walnut and Charles Streets. 

There is no charge to sell at YART, and YART does not take a cut of your sales. Each artist has about a parking space to set up in. Artists manage their own sales and set up their own displays. It's often very windy, so keep that in mind. Many artists make art live during YART! 

YART is an all-volunteer/no-budget event and I am very grateful to Cheryl Crowder of the Muncie Downtown Development Partnership for support and the donation of YART poster printing, Old National Financial for the donated use of their parking lot, and to The Artist Within, Inc. for being great YART neighbors! 

The 2014 Spring Muncie YART will be held at the same time as the May 2014 First Thursday Gallery Walk throughout Downtown Muncie. There is a LOT going on with art shows, live music, food, and community fellowship. The Caffeinery has just opened across the street from the YART lot too. This will be a really fun night for everyone and it's great to support local artists!

Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts and BSU’s Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts Lab for First Thursday on August, 7th. IDIA will host live digital music accompanied by an LED light show, featuring performances by Keith Kothman and Stephen Weigel at 6 p.m. The lab will be open between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. featuring interactive projects using Oculus Rift and Kinect.
The event is free and open to the public will take place on the third floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts in the Grand Hall.

IDIA is an interdisciplinary media arts lab that intersects art, science and technology. IDIA designs projects in virtual reality, immersive art, games, simulation and human computer interaction and is housed on the third floor of Cornerstone.

Additionally, the Cornerstone Art Gallery, located on the 2nd floor, will be open to the public featuring the paintings of Tambra White and Wendy Carpenter in the show “Student Endeavors.” White and Carpenter are both students of Cornerstone’s Arts Program.

A Retrospective Look at a Muncie Legend, the Artwork of Bette Graham

In addition to the easily recognized block prints, work in water color and pen and ink will be on display in a salon style format "like it, buy it, take it".  We will welcome back the BSU Ceramics Department and students with our potters wheels and throwing demonstration in the Old National Trust/YART parking lot. "Meat Tray Prints" is an activity for children and will be in the YART activities area. For many years, Bette Graham introduced Girl Scouts and young children to printmaking through this technique at Camp Munsee.  BSU Art Education majors will help continue this at the printmaking booth.  This will be a free activity.

Such a Good Sport

An exhibit featuring award-winning photographer Pamela de Marris opens at Gallery 308 on October 2.  “Such a ‘Good Sport” is a collection of fine art photography of the artist’s shared life experiences with her husband James Meadows spanning thirty years. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

De Marris explains her exhibit, “The pieces hanging on these walls describe his influence on my life, which has been more than any other person I have known. These images visually describe my changing interpretations and emotional views of the different periods we have gone through with our children and each other.   Depicting Jim during the early years was basically documentation.  As our relationship and children grew, I began to express feelings toward him abstractly.  The most recent photographs of Jim are a combination of reality and personal concerns.    Images were selected from past series, providing a chronological portrayal of interactions with family and friends.”                                                                   

De Marris began taking photos when she was nine years old. She won a Brownie camera by signing up 12 new subscribers along her paper route in rural Michigan for the Niles Daily Star. "I didn't have the greatest childhood, so I used the camera to document the things I was questioning--my siblings, my parents, whatever," she says. "It allowed me to control the moment I captured." 

Like 19th-century photographers, De Marris favors long exposure times. Her lighting is simple, her images lushly saturated. The colors look more like they came from an oil palette than photographic dyes. De Marris makes life-size prints, laminates them with an ultraviolet protector, and frames them herself with elegant black molding.

De Marris stated, “The importance of this exhibition lies in the fact that Jim has allowed himself to be transferred outside his around the clock physician’s duties into a personal pictorial diary about his life.  This body of work shares my intense feelings regarding him, which range from happiness to anguish.  The various environments, lighting styles and costumes employed to capture Jim on film reflect my concerns regarding our relationship.”

According to the photographer, while computer generated images are commonplace today, these pieces have been printed from unaltered negatives.  The only slight exception is that, in some images, original negatives were spliced together.  The photographs honestly represent James Meadows.

De Marris earned her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL.  She also did graduate work in photography, video, film and digital at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad including New York, Chicago, Boston, France, Belgium, and Italy   winning numerous awards and recognitions. De Marris was a faculty member at Ball State University in the Fine Art Department from 1991-2011. She has also served as a visiting artist at the Universidad de Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia and at the American Museum, Giverny, France. 

Gallery 308, which provides space for local and regional artists with monthly “First Thursday” exhibits, is in its 14th year as a nonprofit art gallery.  For more information about the Gallery 308 ArtsWalk exhibit opening, contact sherry@jackscamera.com. Scabrous Sciaphobia

Something frightening is brewing in the gallery at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. An exhibit titled, “Scabrous Sciaphobia,” will hang for the month of October and it may just give some patrons the shivers. “Scabrous,” can mean, “having a rough surface,” or, “full of difficulties.” “Sciaphobia” is a fear of shadows. Together, these words create a perfect expression for the haunting month in a century-old building in downtown Muncie.

The artist Lynette Whitesell says about her work, “Scabrous Sciaphobia is defined to me as a fear of shadows that is full of difficulties. Interpreted differently, this body of work confronts life issues, fears, relationships and struggles that haunt us in our lives and how we hide from those struggles.

“I enjoy pushing our classically-conditioned society to peer at the difference between happy and sad, dark and light, etc. I am utilizing heavy impasto with strong hues juxtaposed with photos and ephemera from long ago. I relate our lives and years of experience with multiple layers on the panel. These mixed media pieces resemble encaustic work with techniques that include different textures, images, transfers, text and new to my work: stitching.”

Whitesell works in mixed media, using heavy pigments and strong hues juxtaposed with photos from long ago. One piece, titled, “The Culmination of Amy,” shows a young couple, embraced, perhaps in gardening or work clothes. They are surrounded by a collage of brightly colored papers, hand-stitched on one side, with illegible writing across the scene. Is it a postcard? The couple looks down at the ground in front of them. Are they planting something, or burying something? What difficulties or shadows are we being shown?

Born and raised in Hartford City, Indiana, Lyn is a fine arts graduate of Ball State University. She has worked in East Central Indiana for sixteen years as a graphic designer, illustrator, and creative director and has won numerous awards for her graphic design work. She has also taught at the collegiate level, conducted arts workshops, participated in the Governor’s Arts Awards, and serves on the board of Arts Place in Portland, Indiana. The recipient of two Indiana Arts Commission Artist Grants, Lyn has exhibited her work in art shows and galleries, and has work in numerous public and private collections.

The artist will speak briefly about her work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. Muncie Open Screen

Muncie Open Screen is a monthly showcase for local filmmakers at the Muncie Civic Theatre. It operates similarly to an ‘Open Mic Night’ for singers or comedians— local filmmakers can bring their short films, music videos, commercials, home movies, or whatever else they have in a video format and see it played on the big screen.

There is no cost to submit, but there will be an optional, suggested donation at the door. All donations go directly to the Muncie Civic Theater. Each screening is all ages and open to the public.

CAP Americano Sur 2014: An exhibition of Latin American design seen through the eyes of sixteen College of Architecture and Planning students. One Month / Two Continents / Four Countries / Ten Cities

Artistic Explorations of the Proposed Damming of the White River:  Work created by local artists Judy Wand, Cindy Norrick Turner, the Hoosier Environmental Council and others in support of the movement against damming the White River in Anderson will explore both large scale and small scale impacts of this proposed dam on the environment.  Analyses of the affected area in Mounds State Park, by students from the College of Architecture and Planning will accompany this exhibit.​

Rose Court is pleased to have the following artists for the October's Arts Walk – featuring the work of two award winning photographers – Jennifer Smith and Andrea Swartz as well as the pen & ink work of students from Ball State University.

Jennifer Smith is a self-taught photographer who enjoys using her skills to document her travels.  This past summer she spent two weeks in Iceland.  Thursday's exhibit features images highlighting colors and textures of this unique and beautiful country.

Andrea Swartz is an architect and professor at Ball State University's Department of Architecture.  Her photography work is used in the exploration of architecture and informs her design process and the communication of ideas.  The photographs presented document the design competition Sukkahville2013 in Toronto Canada, in which Swartz's design for a sukkah (small temporary structure used in the celebration of Sukkot, a Jewish festival) was selected as a finalist in an international design competition.  The project was built and exhibited in Toronto with help from the build team of Shannon Buchanan and Morganne Walker (undergraduates in architecture), Julie Musial (graduate architecture student), Janice Shimizu (faculty), Maya Coggeshall and Jennifer Smith.  For more information on Sukkahville2013 see http://andreaswartz.com

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on November 6, 2014, for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Gabbi Rose Cunningham. The show entitled “Oh My, What Beautiful Shoes You Have” is an exploration of some of the most fascinating fairy tales and stories from our childhoods.

With selections from tales both famous and obscure, the show features a series of paintings which depict Hans Christian Anderson’s tale The Red Shoes, as well as standalone paintings from such worlds as Alice in Wonderland, Coraline, Goblin Market, and other tales. The artist’s fascination with the worlds and characters created in such stories has combined with her unique, grunge like painting style to create a show which delves into the fear, wonder, imagination, and dreamlike nature of fairy tales themselves.

The opening reception will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display throughout the month of November.

ArtsWalk 2015 will be First Thursday October 1st from 5-9pm The Artist Within will feature the Muncie Artists Guild. The Guild will be unveiling their mural that depicts a 1907 downtown Muncie scene entitled, “Main Street Looking West”. Twenty-one artists from the Guild participated by each painting an 18”x18”canvas depicting a section of the scene.  Some of the artists used oils while others chose to paint with acrylics. The panels will be assembled to create the large mural.  The mural will remain on display at the Artist Within throughout the month of October, but will then be moved to a permanent location in City Hall as a gift to the city from the Muncie Artists Guild. The members will also be showing several individual works of art.  Please join us for the October 1st reception at the Artists Within featuring music by Bryce Taylor and light refreshments.

In addition to the exhibit, Toren Scott will have his pottery on display out front with Normandy Flowers on the scene filling Toren's pieces with fresh flower arrangements by his wife Audrey.

There will also be a pottery demonstration conducted by the BSU Ceramics Department.

Muncie’s own Jennie Devoe will perform on the Canan Commons Stage at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of her set at 8:30 p.m., we will set in motion a spectacular lighted interactive display. The project was funded by a grant to MDDP by Ball Brothers Foundation and was designed by PROJECTiONE and Ball State’s Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts. The launch of this one-of-a-kind public attraction will be the cornerstone of our celebration of Muncie’s 150th birthday. This special event for all ages includes other surprises as well!  You will not want to miss this Sesquicentennial finale.

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for the First Thursday ArtsWalk on October 1, 2015, for your last chance to see "Pop Art Presidents" by Missy Adams. The show entitled “Pop Art Presidents” is a collection of paintings honoring the lives and history of the 43 presidents of the United States.

Missy Adams is a local artist who took her love of portrait painting and history to create a series of paintings celebrating the colorful personalities and interesting lives led by the nation’s presidents. The show was painted with the limited color palette of red, white, and blue and utilizes shading and layering to create depth representing each president’s own personality. Each painting features a corresponding quote from that president displayed under their portrait.

The artist will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts, 520 E. Main St, Muncie.

Adams describes painting as her passion, love, therapy, and her nightmare at times. She started painting at a young age and has been primarily self-taught. She has experimented with watercolor, acrylics, oil, gouache, and even coffee to paint on glass, cardboard, canvas, and paper to discover what works best. She describes her style as not realistic per se, attributing her ability to see things differently from others as her inspiration.

Monkey Thunder 5

Monkey Thunder started four years ago as a one-night only, pop-up, art coup of sorts in an effort to address the wants and needs of an under-served faction of our local arts community. With little to no guarantee of staying power, it thrived. After 4 glorious iterations, Monkey Thunder is back, and it's going public!

Organized and curated by Gallery Manager Braydee Euliss, MT5 will be a month-long event with the opening reception coinciding with ArtsWalk, Downtown Muncie's biggest First Thursday of the year on October 1st from 5 - 9 PM.

The artwork featured will be an eclectic selection of both 2D and 3D work from local and regional artists, current faculty and students at Ball State University School of Art, as well as guest artists from across the country.

In addition to the work displayed at GFAF gallery, Monkey Thunder 5 includes video, performance, and other time-based artwork on view in Muncie Civic's Black Box Theatre under the direction of Maura Jasper, visual artist, filmmaker, and Assistant Professor of Intermedia Art at BSU. This 'side-show' is a Monkey Thunder favorite and offers a rare exhibit experience for both the artists and the audience.

Light refreshments will be served, DJ Jannell will provide the music, and the public is invited to attend. This is a family friendly event, but please note, the work on exhibit will be interpretive, experimental, difficult, conceptual, and subversive. Walnut in Muncie’s Downtown Arts District.  The studio is located in Suite 102 of the Mitchell Place Building and is a fully functioning jewelry design studio with a retail space that allows customers to purchase pieces of jewelry created in the studio and/or place custom orders.  Heidi is known for her creative designs, unique use of materials and outstanding craftsmanship.  She has been making beautiful jewelry along with teaching others for many years.

Narrative Tables, Dept of Architecture BSU, Instructor: Sean Burns
How might concepts and methodologies of “narratology” be integrated within the design and fabrication of an object?  This exhibition investigates the potential for a table to serve as a medium to express a chosen story, using narrative world-making strategies, borrowed from contemporary literary theories. Each designed table tells and teaches a different story by encouraging the message of the narratives to be discovered, interpreted, and experienced by the end user through the detailing, material selections, form, and function of the object.

Ball State’s IDIA Lab, in partnership with Paws, Inc, Delaware County Historic Society, Muncie Arts and Culture Council, Center for Middletown Studies, Ball State University Libraries and Ball State Information Technology, has created a special digital art event in honor of Muncie’s 150th birthday. “B.F.A. Thesis Exhibition” The Atrium Gallery will be exhibiting a B.F.A. Thesis show featuring the artwork of seven graduating seniors: Daniel Bunker, Garrett Heinkel Alexa Litchfield, Nicole Nikas Jenna Stadick, Chao Wang, and Noelle Wiegand. The opening reception for this show will be held on Friday, May 6th from 4-6pm.

“Lauren King: 11,520 Hours of Difference” Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts for First Thursday on May 5 for an opening reception and art show featuring the work of Lauren King. The show titled “11,520 Hours of Difference” is Lauren’s senior thesis exhibition which brings to life the abstract idea of finding one’s identity. Born an identical twin, Lauren had to balance trying to find an individual identity, while still embracing her connection to her sister. King is interested in how the cyclical manner of genetics and the interaction we have with our environments works to produce unique individuals. She believes that our biology—the traits and tendencies we were born with—interacts with experiences that we have to build our personalities. For this body of work, she combines patterns found in human cells and within the environment to create complex, intriguing compositions. King relies mainly on watercolors to create the majority of the collection.

The opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display and open to the public throughout the month of May.

Born, raised, and currently residing in Yorktown, Indiana, King was exposed to the arts at Ball State University at a young age. Her passion for art began in fourth grade during a Saturday Children’s Art Class field trip to the David Owsley Museum of Art on Ball State University’s campus. This love for art and the university campus led Lauren to pursue a degree in art therapy at Ball State. While attending the university, Lauren has been a part of two immersive learning projects through the David Owsley Museum of Art: Synergizing Music and Art, and the Infinite Museum, both aimed to make the museum’s collection more accessible for a diverse group of museum visitors. Beginning in the Fall semester of 2016, King will begin her graduate studies at IUPUI in the art therapy program.

“After Hours Art Reels: Blazing Saddles” Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, in collaboration with The Fickle Peach, presents After Hours Art Reels following the First Thursday Gallery Walks in May. Come enjoy the gallery exhibits from 5-8pm, and join us afterwards at dusk for great cult and art film classics!

Films will be projected onto the Mutual Bank wall on Charles Street at dusk. Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio area located at 117 E. Charles St. for guests who are 21 and up. Viewers who are not yet 21 can watch the films from the sidewalk surrounding the patio area.

“The Thick of It: Oil Paintings by Margie Prim” Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate First Thursday, May 5th from 5 – 8 pm with an opening reception for The Thick of It, oil paintings by Margie Prim. The exhibit will feature several recent paintings by the local artist who will be on hand to engage with viewers. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Margie Prim delivers quiet scenes with a bold painting technique. From several feet away, all is calm in both Prim’s still life and landscape paintings. Upon closer inspection, though, gestural swipes and heavy dabs of color reveal a much more powerful and passionate approach to her subject matter. The technique is known as "impasto," where the artist often uses a palette knife to apply paint to the canvas so thick that it projects outward from the surface. 

“Inspiration comes to me by what I see, whether it be plein air or still life,” the quiet artist explains. “Using color, from grays to brights, is always an adventure for me.” 

Now known for both plein air landscapes and still life paintings, quiet of subject and wild with impasto and bold color detail, Margie Prim began her art career in the 1960s in Oklahoma by taking painting lessons. She laid her brushes down until the early 1990s when she again took lessons from Walt Lewis and at the Stan Nossett Art School. Margie continued her studies through memberships in the Minnetrista Art Guild and the Indiana Plein Air Painters. Whereas many artists work from sketches or photographs in the comfort of their studio, plein air painters specifically work outside, on location, to create their paintings. Prim is adept in both methods.

Prim has shown in the Minnetrista Annual, the Richmond Art Museum Annual, Indiana State Fair, the Women’s Commission Art Exhibit, Redtail Conservancy Open Spaces Exhibit, and the Hoosier Salon. She has won awards at several exhibits and held several one woman exhibits in the region.

A short talk about Prim’s work will be given at 6:15 pm. Guests are encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the artist throughout the evening.

This exhibit will remain up through the month of May, with an opening reception on May 5th from 5-8pm. Live music by Bryce Taylor and light refreshments will add to the evening’s festivities.

“Ball State Urban Planning Projects” Two Ball State student projects will be on display in the Rose Court during First Thursday events, May 4th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Students from the 2nd year class in Urban Planning explored development ideas for a downtown park that included investigating the concept of an entertainment/cultural district as part of an overall redevelopment strategy. In addition, students studying trends in urban agriculture have used the Muncie Action Plan districts to explore the question “how much of our food could we produce locally?” Both class were under the instruction of Associate Professor Scott Truex of the Department of Urban Planning.  For more information contact Prof. Truex at struex@bsu.edu.

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on June 2, 2016 for the opening reception and art show titled "Life in Plastic," by Sarah Shaffer. This show explores society's monumental impact through the form of our tiniest role models. Beyond objectification and the weight of the world's expectations, creating this body of work was a very personal journey for Sarah. She created these paintings using one of her daughter's dolls as a model with the color palette of her childhood memory. These pieces embody her own path to define her self-image and the desire to not pass along physical insecurities to future generations. The opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts.
