Join PlySpace (plyspace.org) and Ball State University School of Art for the visiting artist lecture for PlySpace Resident Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado. Diacon-Furtado will speak about his work and answer questions about his practice and time spent in Muncie at the PlySpace Residency, a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (munciearts.org). 

This event will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 6 PM-7PM via Ball State School of Art Live (https://sites.bsu.edu/artlive/). A live Q&A will follow the lecture. Attendees can view the lecture for free. 

Over the last 3 weeks, Diacon-Furtado has worked with 2D Foundation students at Ball State University School of Art in a virtual collaboration. Our Patterns, a project spanning 6 separate classes and including over 100 student participants who developed pattern-based works to create a community “quilt” of patterns, visible on Instagram (@ourpatterns_Muncie). The public is encouraged to follow the progress of this project online, which will culminate in a projected exhibition on the exterior of the PlySpace building on First Thursday, November 5th.

Diacon-Furtado is an internationally recognized and award-winning Brazilian and American artist and designer who has exhibited globally in venues including the Venice Biennale of Architecture and the Buenos Aires International Biennial of Architecture. His design work has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times and Dwell magazine, and he is a founding partner of the New Orleans based arts-focused design studio opossum (itsopossumtime.com).

PlySpace is a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council in collaboration with Ball State University School of Art and Sustainable Muncie Corporation, supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The ART of #MeToo”: The movement heard around the world. We’ve all heard of women coming forward with their stories of mistreatment from men. Molestation is maturity in a moment a sort of soul murder. This problem, forbidden from conversation for so many years, stems from a variety of underlying factors at play. One in five women will be raped in her lifetime. Rape culture is prevalent in all communities worldwide. Women in power in the USA and Europe had the opportunity to spread their stories and combat the stigma of a woman standing up for herself. Just a century ago, the #MeToo movement would not have been possible.Local artist Debra Gindhart’s First Thursday exhibit “The ART of #MeToo” combines assemblage art and poetry.

This CAP elective explored the generative act of architecture through the lens of craft. Investigations took positions on technique, authorship, as well as translations between drawing and imaging, technology and craft, aesthetics and information- not necessarily in opposition but in dialogue.  Exhibit also includes new work from English 421 History of the Book (Instructors: Rai Peterson, Book Arts Collaborative with Kim Miller, Tribune Showprint) as well as students’ continued explorations. Madjax North Entry Hall, 5-8pm

Join PlySpace and BSU School of Art, for a final projection performance of the Our Patterns Muncie project.

This multi-channel installation in the courtyard of Ball State University’s Art and Journalism building represents an emotional physical culmination for the Our Patterns - Muncie project: a three-week collaboration between initiating artist and PlySpace Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado and over 100 students and 5 faculty members of the school of art’s 2D Design Fundamentals program.

Throughout the project, students responded to project prompts provided by Diacon-Furtado and facilitated by the BSU faculty. Each prompt was posted on Instagram at @Ourpatterns_Muncie, and is still available for the public to follow along with the project. In order to give the students and public a way to watch the iterative creative project unfold, the students were instructed to post their working and final designs on Instagram, creating a collaborative digital "quilt" with blocks of pattern.

The project continues to live on indefinitely as a digital community quilt displayed through Instagram (@Ourpatterns_muncie), and as a testament to the power of forming intentional communities through creativity.

On Thursday the 12th of November, we will present the final installment, a multi-channel installation that will feature the large-scale projections of student-designed patterns in a random sequence, injecting chance and randomness into the quilt as a way of making new links and discoveries in this collaboratively built visual language.

This event will be held outdoors in the BSU School of Art Sculpture Courtyard. You can access the courtyard from the parking lot between the Art and Journalism Building and the Teachers College. The projections will be visible from 6:30 - 8 PM. Masks are required. This event is free and open to the public.

Ron Richcreek has discovered that being a potter during a pandemic offers dual benefits:  additional opportunities for creative ideas and sanity. Throwing Cone 10 porcelain has been a new challenge and has brought artistic rewards.  Most recently, he has exhibited at the Richmond Art Museum Juried Show (RAM), IU Med. Ball Hospital and Dandelion's Florist, as well as Instagram.  Check out his work @silverfoxartguy53.  He is ready for the Christmas Season with many new ceramic works.

'Tis the season for social commentary artwork from Debra Gindhart, longtime local artist and former visual arts educator has created WWJB TWO(What Would Jesus Buy 2) a visual look at the consumerism that plagues our planet and feeds our landfills. Techniques of found art, assemblage, and collage produce these telling topical images and wall art.

Debra's last First Thursday exhibit of 2020 will also include hand knitted infinity and cowl neck scarves. A collection of Gindhart fiber art combines thick and soft fibers to create colorful and functional wearable art. Some yarns are hand spun and unique.

Debra’s Green Glam Studio jewelry will feature pendants and recreated chains. Natural stones and art glass hanging off artistically assembled metallics. These pieces reinforce the artist’s personal and creative anthem of “real babes recycle”.

Shane Leffingwell: Artist Shane Leffingwell works with alcohol ink on ceramic tile, sandblasts and paints glass, makes reclaimed art and works with other mediums. This showing will spotlight alcohol inks on  coasters/coaster sets, trivets, spoon rests, individual tiles for display, and paperweights at the Madjax Studios on the 2nd floor from 5-8PM.  He even does light switch and outlet covers!  Leffingwell’s art focuses mostly on abstract images that bring to mind a different idea to each person.  Prices range from $2 to $100.

She started winning awards for her art at a very young age. She won her first award at seven, and received her first portrait commission in her teens. She is self-taught through studying art in national and local museums and learning by experimentation. Her paintings have won numerous awards including “Best of Show” in juried exhibits in Indiana and North Carolina. Her murals have been featured in national magazines and she has been listed in the fine arts section of the “International Who’s Who in Interior Design.”  She currently accepts commissions from throughout the United States. Cornerstone Center for the Arts will be hosting the Opening Reception for "A Tribute to Glass,” an exhibit that will be held in our Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery from 5- 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 4. This gallery is located on the second floor of the Cornerstone Center for the Arts building. Local artist Terrika Clark challenges visitors to see glass differently with her work. She uses acrylic on canvas along with crushed glass to create each piece. We look forward to welcoming guests into our building, but request that visitors follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks. Based in Indianapolis, The Tulip Factory is a company created by Neal Soley. This company campaigns Soley’s exploration of self expression throughout the use of different mediums. Nick Teaford will show his work "Hey Siri? Hey Siri? Oh no! Oh no. Is that an olive on the ground? We must be near Club Sandwich” at the Madjax Studios, 2nd floor. 

PlySpace, an immersive Artist-in-Residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council, is hosting four community panel discussion webinars as part of the series: The Creative Use of Difference. Each panel will feature artists, both local and national, who are using their respected art forms to creatively bring awareness to societal issues such as racial injustices, sexism, and more. These hour-long discussions will be in collaboration with Atlanta-based artist Indya Childs as she develops a new work, entitled "Peace, Love, Dance" with Ball State University Department of Theatre and Dance students. The semester-long project will culminate in a dance film, choreographed by Indya and the students in response to the Creative Use of Difference series. The film will be completed and will premiere later this spring, details forthcoming. All discussions in the Creative Use of Difference series will be held online, are free, and open to the public. Tom Heatherly, Muncie Artists Guild’s Featured Artist for March 2021

Heatherly worked at Muncie Community Schools for more than two decades before retiring in 2011. Since that time, he has been pursuing his passion for oil painting. His hard work at honing his painting skills has paid off with success as he has won several awards for his paintings in the past ten years. In 2019 he won the Peoples’ Choice Award at the Muncie Artists Guild’s Annual Show. 

Heatherly prefers to paint people, landscapes and buildings. His wartime experience also influences his artwork.  Heatherly is a Vietnam War Army Veteran who served in the 25th Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne Division from 1970 to 1971. He has created several paintings of soldiers in action from this time period. One of these paintings is proudly on permanent display in the Yorktown American Legion. 

As the Muncie Artists Guild’s Artist of the Month, Tom Heatherly’s oil paintings will be on display for the entire month of March at Northwest Bank on East Charles, at Vera Mae’s Bistro on South Walnut, at Old National Bank on South Madison Avenue and at Let There Be Art on White River Boulevard in Muncie.

Opening Reception for Fire an Art Exhibition by Scott Livingston
Hosted by Cornerstone Center for the Arts in conjunction with DWNTWN Muncie’s First Thursday

In his debut exhibit, local artist Scott Livingston shares what remains of his abstract pieces after they've been engulfed in flames. His show, Fire, will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center of the Arts.

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 4, from 5 - 8 p.m. and will remain on display until Friday, March 26. A virtual gallery will be available on the Cornerstone Center for the Arts website during this time.

Drawing and making things have been strong lines of continuity for me in a life that has otherwise been nomadic and varied. I recently retired from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Ball State where I taught drawing and graphics, and design and other professional courses, similar teaching loads as at my prior two universities, at Illinois and Cornell. This followed a mid-life career change from practicing architecture, and a realization  that the in between spaces were of more interest to me than the buildings. Two years in  graduate school in landscape architecture were a wonderful renewal, and a return to drawing and making again.

 With full-time teaching aside now, there has been time to do both. Sketching with ink, pencil and Conte crayons has led to doing portraits of friends’ horses in pastel, as well as to turning some drawings into linocuts and prints. 

I’ve also grown fascinated with stitch and fabric, and the potential for mark-making with thread and dye. Making quilts as wall-hangings is currently a focus, with subjects ranging from abstractions of color and pattern, to the landscape and its textures. 

As a member of the Muncie Art Guild I’ve been showing work locally for the past several years, as well as with the Pendleton Artists Society. A quilt with patterns of tree bark was included in and international exhibit in Oregon in 2019, and last year an embroidered print was shown at the Indianapolis Art Center.

Michelle Duran:
Michelle Duran is an art historian whose interests span the material and spiritual worlds, and these interests are reflected in some of the items she makes in miniature: votive candles, tarot decks, ouija boards, and magnets. She also sells hoodoo oils, incense, and jewelry. this week she will have a limited selection of hand embroidered dishtowels for sale. she is a strong believer in the power of rhinestones and glitter and the good madness that is art.

Mattie Ewing:
Mattie Ewing is an art enthusiast who enjoys making a variety of many different items that are expressive to her personality and spirituality. These items include Beginner to Advanced Spiritual Kits, Manifestation boxes, Spirit Boards, mini voodoo dolls, elegant profanity, and her own version of The Major Arcana. She uses upcycled items such as empty jars and even cereal boxes in her work. Mattie’s children, Arabella and Oliver, are artists in training and will be selling their their eclectic and unique drawings, alongside their mom’s work.

Debra Gindhart:
Out of the ARCHIVES. Archival artworks by Debra Gindhart, local artist-maker and visual arts educator. The Gindhart Collection curated, for March’s  First Thursday at Madjax Muncie. Wallart is aerosols, acrylics and or assemblages. Enjoy the extraordinary social commentary messages in paint and found objects, including "An Armed Society is a Polite Society", One Man’s Trash is Another Women’s Awakening”, “Coloured Countenances”, "Mixed Messages", "Cancer Mill", "Folklore", "Polyester Flora", “Dismal Disney” and more. 

There is also a new Green Glam Studio jewelry collection “Hold My Hoops Gurl”(earrings) and “Boho Stones Sets”(pendant and earring sets), too.

Denise King:
Denise King will be showing pieces from her series “All Grit: Kids in 2020” at the Madjax second floor galleries for March First Thursday. 
 

Neal Soley:
Based in Indianapolis, The Tulip Factory is a company created by Neal Soley. This company campaigns Soley’s exploration of self expression throughout the use of different mediums. The collection of works are representative of periods throughout Soley’s exploration. Please join the artist Thursday, February 4 on the second floor of the Madjax Building. Practice social distancing and kindly wear a mask when needed, and view a collection of paintings on canvas, works on paper, and more.

On First Thursday, PlySpace will be hosting the final of our online “Creative Use of Difference Discussions - The ‘New’ Policies of Dance.”

The “New” Policies of Dance is a discussion with dance educators that will highlight the new policies of inclusion, diversity, and equality in the dance world adopted by dance schools, institutions, etc in the wake of 2020. Featuring guest panelists Felecia Thomas and Beverly Bautista.
