Hand build your choice of a bowl or plate using a slump mold. The plates can be decorated using underglaze, or participants can use the Scraffitio technique to 'scratch' lines into an underglaze and reveal a contrasting color of the clay.

Participants will build a simple electronic circuit that creates a musical tone with a pitch that can be changed using a light sensor. The instrument will be mounted in a keepsake box along with a mint-tin speaker. There will be an explanation of how the circuit works and suggestions for future development of the instrument.

Downtown Development and Ball State’s Office of Community Engagement present Muncie Mystery! We need your "hand" solving this year's Muncie Mystery! Join us downtown during September's First Thursday to question suspects, look for clues and - hopefully - solve the case!

What we know so far: The Addams Family’s beloved Helping Hand, Thing, is missing! The butler, Lurch, suspects that someone in the family knows where Thing is because there was evidence from each of them left in the same room where his empty box was found, the library of Addams Manor. 

Pick up your Crime Tracker form and map at Canan Commons beginning at 5:30 p.m., then visit participating downtown businesses to hear alibis from the suspects and look over the evidence. Turn in your guesses at Canan Commons by 7:30 p.m. because the big reveal is set for 8 p.m. on the Canan Commons stage.

Sleuths with correct guesses will be entered into a drawing for great downtown prizes! (You must be present at reveal to win!)

Muncie Mystery is hosted by Ball State's Office of Community Engagement, Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, Ivy Tech Community College, and Muncie Civic Theatre.

@garfieldfrommemory is the guest artist at first Thursday art show in September 9/7 dont miss this !! Kate Parnell is 43 years old, and since February 24, 2019 she has drawn and painted Garfield (the cartoon cat) every day. She lives and works in her parents’ house in Richmond, Virginia, and travels around the country doing small pop up markets where she sells paintings and gets to meet some of her 18,000+ Garfield-loving instagram followers. While her subject matter is deceptively simple, drawing Garfield from memory saved her life, becoming not only a creative outlet but also a source of income, stability and confidence after many years of battling depression. These Garfield drawings and paintings form a body of work spanning four and a half years, reflecting not only her taste but the incredible sensibilities of her followers, whose Garf commissions of album covers, portraits, pets, inside jokes and erotica have “kept the lights on” and kept the project going. It is a kind of self-portrait, not only of the artist but of a community of people who find joy in humor, creativity, and love for a fat orange icon of the past 45 years, in both the tenuous space of a social media platform and in the real world.

Parnell is also attempting to become the Guinness World Record holder for most tattoos of a single cartoon character. She has 32 Garfield tattoos, and needs 24 more to take the title. Like her daily Garfing, the process of building her Garf tattoo collection has given her a joyous momentum and introduced her to artists around the world. Screening at the show will be filmmaker Michael Arcos’ documentary short “Orange From Memory,” which offers a glimpse into the world of Garfield From Memory and its incredibly orange obsession. This 14 minute piece will be screened at multiple film festivals in the fall.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts, 520 East Main St., again will host local artists and Cornerstone artists in displaying and selling their work Sept. 7 from 5-8 p.m. in the Great Room. 

Artist in Residence Debra Gindhart Dragoo is coordinating this event.

Dragoo is also hosting a project/workshop “Re-making Maps In Muncie: A Map Into Art Workshop”, where participants utilize large format linen maps to create collages, paintings and other unique art pieces. The workshop encourages participants to create new world visions or add ideas about the world as it remakes itself. The workshop will take place during First Thursday from 5-8 p.m. also in the Great Room.

Community artists participating in this First Thursday include Gracelynne Strean, Mike Lassiter, Stefan Mckell, Mikell Vawter, Val Kelley, Hazel McCully, Joleigh M Paul, Tom Stader, Jill Palumbo, Maevyn Stone and her daughters Lily, Emma and Iris. Cornerstone artists include Eugene Boyd, Leon and Laura Crosby of Crosby Family Art, Michelle Metsker-Cass and Olivia Morrow. 

Musician Maevyn Stone, a classical harpist, will perform. 

The featured artist for September is Michelle Metsker-Cass, of Made By Meeshy Art, who will be exhibiting her work titled “Fluid Beauty” in Cornerstone’s Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery.

Patterns in Nature: the Art of Aaron Nicholson:
Gordy Fine Art and Framing is proud to highlight the art of Muncie resident Aaron Nicholson. Nicholson’s art reflects physical patterns found in the natural world as well as behavioral patterns in the way humans relate to nature, both on earth and our observations and speculations about the universe. The party will be on First Thursday, September 7, from 5 – 8 pm with live music by Luke Mitchell and Joshua Vance. The artist will be on hand. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

Nicholson is a sculptor and a painter. His most ambitious work uses ancient techniques of pouring molten metal into sand molds. When he does this, the act of making art is itself an expression of his relationship to natural materials. Many of the sculptures in the exhibition were made this way.   

At 6:15, Nicholson will speak about his work and the techniques he uses to make it.The exhibit will remain on view through September 30. 

At Muncie’s recent Fire Up Downtown event in early August, Nicholson organized an Iron Pour where he fired a 2400-degree furnace to melt iron which he then poured into molds to make art. It was an extreme demonstration of an ancient technology that we rarely get to see. In addition to the show at Gordy, many of the castings at the Fire Up event will be on view the same evening at the Muncie Visitors Bureau at 410 S. Walnut St. in downtown Muncie.

Art4Quarters, an art vending machine, will open on September 7, 2023 at Made In Muncie pottery shop in downtown Muncie. Art4Quarters is a flat vend style machine that will sell stickers, mini prints, and zines from local artists for the humble price of four quarters. 
Artwork will be rotated on a quarterly basis. This quarter’s featured artists are Roque Chavez, Kendall Hess, and Lauren Pontenberg. Art4Quarters’ curator, Mary Arnett-Delaney, aims to make buying local art accessible and fun. She hopes Art4Quarters will be an ongoing destination for artists to sell small works.

Muncie Artist Guild’s “Artist of the Month” for September is Jean McCauley, the winner of the Best-in-Show Award at our Annual Show. 

Jean McCauley is an award winning artist who has been a member of the Muncie Artists Guild as well as various other art groups for many years. She studied art in college but stopped painting to raise a family. About 25 years ago, Jean began painting again and took numerous workshops with a number of Indiana painters. She primarily paints with oils, acrylics, and recently has begun painting with pastels. Her subject matter is usually landscapes but she has been known to paint a dog or two.

Intro to Vinyl is a hands-on class series designed to introduce students to the fascinating art of designing, creating, and applying vinyl decals. Whether you're a crafting enthusiast or a complete beginner, this class is perfect for unleashing your creativity and producing eye-catching projects.

Throughout the course, our experienced instructor will guide you through the fundamental techniques of working with vinyl. You'll learn how to use design software to create unique and personalized decals, explore different vinyl types, and gain insights into proper application methods.

The class curriculum is designed to ensure that every student gets to explore their skills through three exciting projects. First, you'll create an adhesive decal, allowing you to practice the art of precision cutting and application on various surfaces. Next, you'll dive into creating a customized tumbler, learning the art of layering vinyl to produce stunning and intricate designs on a 3D surface. Finally, you'll craft a stylish canvas zipper pouch, combining both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality.

Students will also have the option to create their own custom project using the skills they’ve gained during the class.

Come explore the design process through paper airplanes and gliders. This hands-on and interactive workshop is specially curated for aspiring aviation enthusiasts, creative minds, and budding engineers who want to explore the fascinating world of flight and the art of design.

Participants will learn about the physics of flight and practice engineering design skills by testing a variety of materials and prototypes to create your perfect flyer for our friendly competition.

Karen Fisher, who paints and is an active community member since arriving in Muncie in 1972, completed her degree in art education at Ball State in 1976 when she met her husband Paul. Dice, cards, and spinners, oh my! This delightful and interactive workshop is designed to bring friends and families together for a day of fun, creativity, and bonding through the joy of games. Unleash your imagination and embark on a creative journey to design and conceptualize your own personalized board game or interactive activity.

From brainstorming game mechanics and crafting game boards to designing characters and game pieces, participants will have the freedom to let their creativity soar. Various materials, art supplies, and tools will be provided.

Participants will also be able to explore the Design Lab and learn about the different technologies available to create custom game pieces.

Muncie–Cornerstone Center for the Arts, 520 East Main St., again will host local artists and Cornerstone artists in displaying and selling their work Nov. 2nd from 5-8 p.m. in the Great Room. Artist in Residence Debra Gindhart Dragoo is coordinating this event.

Community artists participating this November include Val Kelley, Mikell Vawter, Maya Doss, Angel Gillette, Megan Senate, Assata Flannigan, Liliana Osborne, Casey Myers, Jadon Stamm, Tom Stader, Janessa Erickson, Bards On The Run, Jill Palumbo, Anne Maddox, Jennifer Morris, Stephen B. The featured artist for November is Marcia Wade, a retired MCS Muncie Community Schools educator. She and her late husband were dedicated art collectors and patrons of Muncie artwork. Most of the pieces of this donation were originally purchased from Gordy’s Fine Arts and Framing.

There are over forty pieces including ceramics, sculpture, prints, paintings and drawings. 

If you’re currently a local art collector you will not want to miss this incredible art installation.

Larry Fentz 
Larry was born and raised in central Indiana. His art career started in the mid 1970’s along with his passion for watercolor painting.  Larry worked several years as a technical draftsman, artist, and designer for commercial design studios in Indianapolis. In 1983 he moved to Muncie to work as a staff artist at Paws Inc., home of the Garfield comic strip.  For 33 years he was an integral part of the comic strip production and merchandising art as an inker and airbrush artist. 

Larry has pursued watercolor painting for over 40 years. He is considered a transparent watercolor artist on the contemporary side of traditional. He is a member of the Hoosier Salon, American Watercolor Society (AWS), and the Kentucky Watercolor Society (KWS). He is a Signature member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana (WSI) and a lifetime Signature member of the Whiskey Painters of America.

Martin Price
In the fall of Marty’s third year at Taylor University, he saw for the first time in his life a pot being thrown on the wheel. He realized then that clay was what he wanted to learn. Marty got his master’s degree in art education from Ball State University.  He taught high school art for 29 years retiring from Wapahani High School. In 2008 Marty and his wife spent the winter in Colorado specifically to learn the raku technique from potters in Colorado Springs.  His current work is balanced with raku and high fired functional as well as occasional wood fired pottery. Marty is an Indiana Artisan who has worked in clay for more than 40 years. 

Kerry Shaw
Growing up in the Midwest, Kerry had an interest in life outdoors and drawing from a very early age. He attended Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida where he studied fine art and graphic design. Later, he graduated from Ball State University where he studied graphic design and photography. He enjoyed a 22-year career with Ball Corporation as a designer and director of communications, followed by a 20-year career with Anderson University as a designer and director of publications. In addition, he has operated his own design firm, shawDesign, since 1996. 

After retiring from Anderson University, he began to paint again. Capturing the light on a face or landscape of interest has always been the driving force of his paintings. Kerry’s memberships include the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association (IPAPA), Hoosier Salon and the Santa Rita Art League. He also paints with the Tucson Barrio Painters and various other well-known artists. Kerry and his wife Donna reside in Muncie, Indiana and winter in Green Valley, Arizona.

Laurie's Artist Statement/Bio: 
I love everything about the outdoors....and people. Plein air painting provides the opportunity to paint not only what is in front of me, but also how I feel about it, using all of my senses. Painting portraits provides the joy of looking into another person's face many minutes at a time. Using pastels, if they were not so messy, is my favorite medium because of their vibrant and pure color. I also like to flow with watercolors. I have taught art in elementary schools. Now that I am retired, I enjoy interacting with small groups of kids, not only through art, but poetry, games, and gardening. Since retirement, I have written and illustrated ten children's picture books. (All of them are on Amazon) "The Solar Eclipse is Coming" was just released, and is very timely in this season.

RADICAL MAKERS is a salon-style exhibition of jewelry and metalwork by the multi-talented artists who are leading the Radical Jewelry Makeover: Midwest Edition. Over the last 15 years, the Radical Jewelry Makeover has prompted jewelry and metal artists to rethink and challenge their practice as a maker by asking them to consider the environmental consequences of the jewelry industry. This exhibition will highlight the personal artwork of the many artists who are helping to guide and educate both students and the community through radical jewelry maker parties, workshops, and lectures about the process of ethical metalsmithing.

Create your own custom photo ornament! Participants will learn how to sublimate print a photo onto fabric and will then learn basic embroidery stitches and techniques to embellish and creatively adorn their favorite photos. Embellished photos will then be cut out, a ribbon hanger attached, and sewn together and stuffed like a small pillow to create a dimensional ornament.

This hands-on workshop offers a unique opportunity to craft bespoke rubber stamps that reflect your individual style and artistic flair.

By the end of the Custom Rubber Stamps workshop, you'll walk away with a set of beautifully designed and crafted rubber stamps that are exclusively yours. These stamps can be used for scrapbooking, card making, art projects, stationery, and more, adding a personal touch to every creation.

MAggie Abby Molino is our Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month for December 2023.  

Artist Statement/Bio: 
I came to Earth loving buffalo, boots, hats and horses and howled when Mother tried to get me into dresses. Then Mother sewed me a dress with horses on the material and I had been outsmarted. There’s still a remnant of that dress in the little pink box Grandpa brought me my first sewing machine in. I love to sew. 

That was about the same time my father showed me how to use the Kodak Instamatic. Yet another true love was born. I’ve not been without a camera since. 

In grade school, I met the piano and the pencil. I wrote poems and drew horse farm plans, Indiana sunsets and insects. I was the 1968 Indiana State 4-H Champion of Entomology Insect Identification and won a trip to New York City and Washington DC.I was still studying piano and performing on stage when I went to Indiana University Bloomington a few years later. There I majored in Journalism and Communications and took photography classes. I loved the dark room and the film camera. 

While pursuing journalism I got a job at Bloomington Hospital as a clinical secretary and somehow, despite dreams of a radio broadcast career, I graduated, after five and a half years of studying, with a BSN in Nursing from IU Indianapolis. Nursing allows room for variety. I’ve co-owned a custom marine canvas shop where I designed boat tops and boat covers and worked as a professional seamstress while I water-skied my heart out and raised two boys; had a 50-year career in health care working in Clinics, Emergency Rooms, Psychiatric facilities, Hospitals and Nursing Homes; went through a stack of cameras of all types; and raised a riding and driving horse along with a menagerie of goats, sheep, geese, ducks, dogs, cats and pigs. While I haven’t owned a buffalo, I do decorate my house with bison, have a collection of boots and hats and wear them regularly. I now play a keyboard and am a Google Guide with over a thousand photos on line with nearly 23,500,000 views of my pictures. 

As I say in my Google Bio: Nurse, Writer, Poet, Musician, Artist. Forever just isn’t long enough to explore life to its fullest, but photography helps.

Over 30 weeks between January and August of 2023, 13 artists/designers committed to making something every week, intending to display it on a 9x 12 paper poster. There were no limitations to what could be made as long as it was something every week. Some participants used their posters as an opportunity to experiment with mediums, styles, and techniques, while others drew inspiration from activities and environments. The collection of posters becomes a record of experiences over the 30 weeks. The project's foundational belief is that the more that can be created and seen, the stronger the initial ideas become and the more they can grow and change.

Lylanne Musselman is our Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month for January 2024. 

Artist Statement/Bio: 
Lylanne Musselman is an award-winning poet, visual artist, and playwright. Lylanne specializes in people and pet portraits in pastels, gouache, and acrylics. She has traveled coast to coast doing cat shows, pet expos, and art fairs with her pet portraits. Lylanne has exhibited her work at Hoosier Salon, Watercolor Society of Indiana, Ventures in Creativity, Will Vawter Annual, Wabash Valley Exhibition, Northern Indiana Pastel Society, Indiana Heritage Arts, Open Space, and Minnetrista’s Annual Juried Show, among many others. She writes poems bi-monthly for Hancock County Arts Newsletter’s “Pause for Words.” Her art has appeared on the covers of a couple of her poetry chapbooks, and it has appeared in several literary journals, including Etchings 36.1, and the featured artist for Last Stanza Poetry Journal, Issue 3. Musselman teaches writing at Ivy Tech Community College and Indiana Writers Center.

Cornerstone Center for the arts introduces Mikell Vawter as our February featured artist exhibition in our Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery. Vawter speaks on her artworks, “I am a self taught artist originally from Northwest Indiana. I moved to Muncie in October 2022. I specialize in portraits of both animals and people. I do commissions from photographs. I love monsters and fictional characters. I hope someday I can have my own studio/ gallery, but for now I create in my porch turned into an art room.” Meet the artist at February’s First Thursday.

CCA is also excited to announce our monthly musical guest is Arttacgo Alexander. Mr. Arttacgo is a performing arts educator and community engagement coordinator on a mission to create performing arts jobs right here in Delaware County. Gordy Fine Art and Framing is proud to highlight the art of printmaker Sarojini Johnson, Professor of Art in the Ball State University School of Art. Sarojini Jha Johnson has been a printmaker for over four decades, known mostly for color intaglio printmaking a complex and physically demanding process.  The prints in this show represent some of her most ambitious work from throughout her career. Currently teaching intaglio printmaking at Ball State University since 1985, Johnson received an MFA in printmaking from Miami University.  Her work intertwines memories and impressions of India, featuring native animals and plants rendered in colors connected to her cultural heritage and her family. 

At 6:15, Sarojini will speak about her work and her techniques. 

The exhibit will remain on view through March 16.

I realized from a very early age that I loved to draw. I believe one of the ways I have managed through the years is finding and focusing on the beautiful things around me. Hopefully by using the gifts and abilities I’ve been given, I’ve captured some of that beauty for you. What artist doesn’t want to touch the heart of others with their work? That’s my true reward. I’ve been having a lot of fun capturing different historic monuments and locations here in my hometown, Muncie. One of the responsibilities we all have is to do what we love. It’s how we bless others, and I truly enjoy my work. Hopefully you enjoy it as well. It’s a little taste of where we’re from.

Stephen M. Millben II is our Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month for March 2024. 

Stephen’s Artist Statement/Bio: 
I have always wanted to be an artist, so I have done many different styles of art. From my days at Ball State working with oils and ceramics, to my days as a freelance graphic designer. My artwork is a culmination of years of experimenting. The majority of my work is done in  what I call a “stained glass” look. Very reminiscent of the stained glass my father used to create. I also do Urban Mandalas which is my take on the traditional mandalas. Mine use random images and doodles to create very complex images. 

His work will be shown at the following locations: Northwest Bank (E Charles), Old National Bank (S Madison), Rosebud Coffee House, Vera Mae's Bistro, and Parlour Salon.
